Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has launched the construction of Rophine International University at Madago in Kinondo Ward, Msambweni Constituency.
The university is an expansion of Rophine Field Group of Schools, which is based in Kwale and operates primary, secondary and international sixth-form campuses in different parts of the country.
The new institution is expected to expand access to higher education while creating employment and business opportunities for residents. It will offer courses focusing on innovation, the blue economy, technical skills and career development, with an emphasis on practical training relevant to the modern economy.
Speaking during the launch, Achani said the institution would contribute to the economic transformation of the area by equipping young people with skills required in the job market. “This is a big investment that will open doors to many opportunities,” Achani said.

She urged residents, particularly young people, to take advantage of the courses that will be offered once the university becomes operational. Achani said the focus on technical training, innovation and the blue economy would help learners acquire skills aligned with emerging opportunities in Kwale and beyond. She also encouraged parents and students to consider career-oriented courses that can improve their prospects in employment and entrepreneurship.
Rophine Group of Schools CEO Dr Boniface Owiti thanked the Kwale County Government for its continued collaboration and efforts to promote education in the county. Owiti said the institution appreciated the county administration’s commitment to improving access to education, including through the Elimu Ni Sasa Scholarship Programme, which supports students pursuing basic and higher education. He said the partnership between the county government and education institutions would help create more opportunities for learners and strengthen human capital development in the county.
“I want to express my deep appreciation to Madam Governor Achani and her administration for their unwavering support for Rophine Group of Schools in Kwale,” Dr Owiti said.

He said the university would further expand the group’s contribution to education by providing young people with training tailored to the changing job market.
Msambweni MP Feisal Abdallah welcomed the establishment of the institution, saying it would create jobs and stimulate economic activity in the area. He said the university would also give local youth greater access to higher education and professional training without having to travel far from home.
