Water shortage that has long disrupted learning and agricultural activities at Olekasasi Primary School in Kajiado North Constituency, Kajiado County, is set to ease following the rehabilitation of the institution’s borehole.
More than 1,900 learners are expected to benefit from the restored water facility, which will provide a reliable supply for sanitation, hygiene and agricultural activities at the school.
The institution had previously relied on water vendors to meet its needs, an arrangement the State Department for Irrigation described as expensive and unsustainable.
The shortage which affected the implementation of the 4-K Club programme under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), limiting learners’ participation in practical agricultural activities.
Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho commissioned the rehabilitated borehole, saying the facility would serve both the school and the surrounding community.

“The project is therefore not only about providing water; it is about using water to transform learning, improve nutrition and equip young people with practical skills,” Kimotho said.
With the restored water supply, the school has embarked on irrigated agriculture, with learners growing mangoes, kales, spinach and tomatoes.
The initiative is expected to give learners practical exposure to farming while contributing to food and nutrition at the school.

The project followed a request by the school to the State Department for Irrigation to rehabilitate the existing borehole to address its domestic water needs and support agricultural and nutrition programmes.
The facility is also expected to improve water access for the surrounding community and facilitate agricultural activities in the area.
The rehabilitation will further strengthen the 4-K Club programme by giving learners an opportunity to acquire hands-on skills in irrigated agriculture.
