A qualified primary school teacher from Teso North, Busia County, is appealing to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to consider her for employment as she approaches retirement age.
Elizabeth Akirapa, a trained P1 teacher, says she has been waiting for an opportunity to join the public teaching service since 2017 despite having completed her professional training and obtained the necessary documentation.
Akirapa, who lives in Angaro, Teso North Constituency, says her journey to becoming a teacher was marked by significant personal challenges. She lost both parents at a young age and was raised as a total orphan. Despite the difficulties, she persevered with her education and eventually attained the qualifications required to pursue a career in teaching.
Now married, Akirapa remains hopeful that she can still get an opportunity to serve Kenyan learners through the public education system before reaching the mandatory retirement age.

Her appeal comes as the TSC continues to undertake teacher recruitment and deployment based on available vacancies and the applicable recruitment requirements. Akirapa is asking the Commission to consider her case whenever opportunities arise, saying she is ready to serve if given an opportunity. “I have waited for many years, and I still believe I can make a difference in the lives of learners,” she said
For Akirapa, employment would not only fulfil a long-held professional ambition but also provide an opportunity to put her training and experience to use in serving learners.
Her family and well-wishers are now seeking to have her appeal reach relevant authorities, particularly as she gets closer to the end of the period within which she can be recruited into the teaching service.
