The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken its teacher-promotion verification exercise to the grassroots, putting renewed focus on the accuracy of documents used to determine career progression as the 2026 World Teachers’ Day awards process also gathers pace.
TSC Acting Chief Executive Officer Ms Evaleen Mitei, MBS, personally monitored the exercise in Uasin Gishu County on September 15, visiting four verification centres in different sub-counties.
She toured University of Eldoret Secondary School in Moiben, Uasin Gishu High School in Turbo, Kipkaren Road Primary School in Kapseret and Hill School in Kesses.
The field visits gave the commission an opportunity to assess the verification exercise directly while engaging officials involved in processing teachers’ promotion documents.
Ms Mitei also encouraged teachers participating in the World Teachers’ Day awards verification to present their achievements confidently and participate fully in the process.
Her message comes as recognition of teachers increasingly extends beyond classroom teaching to include professional leadership, innovation, learner support and wider contributions to school communities.
Mitei engages education officials
The CEO held discussions with key education leaders, including TSC Uasin Gishu County Director Saina Francis, Acting TSC Elgeyo Marakwet County Director Dr Turphosa Korir, Uasin Gishu County Director of Education David Koech and Wareng Secondary School Principal Dr Shadrack Ngetich.
At Wareng Secondary School, Ms Mitei highlighted the institution’s more than five decades of service and its place in Kenya’s education history.
The school is associated with the educational journey of President William Ruto, who attended Wareng Secondary School for his O-Level education before proceeding to Kapsabet High School for A-Levels. The President’s official profile confirms that he attended Wareng Secondary School.
She also pointed to TSC’s staffing support, noting that more than 90 teachers had been posted to the school.
The CEO praised Wareng learners for their discipline, using the school visit to underline a broader message about the influence teachers have on learner behaviour and school culture.
“The character of the teacher often becomes the culture in the classroom,” she said.
The message places teacher conduct alongside professional competence as a critical ingredient in building disciplined and productive learning environments.
Focus on promotion verification
But for thousands of teachers currently navigating career progression, the most immediate issue remains the integrity of the promotion verification process.
Accurate records, proper documentation and consistent verification are essential if promotion decisions are to reflect teachers’ actual professional qualifications and service.
The WTD awards verification carries a similar responsibility. Recognition of outstanding teachers must be anchored in credible evidence of contribution rather than merely the visibility of nominees.
Ms Mitei’s Uasin Gishu tour therefore puts the spotlight on two issues: how teachers progress in their careers and how their professional contribution is recognised.

As verification continues, the expectation among teachers will be that the process remains transparent, properly documented and accessible, while ensuring deserving educators are given fair consideration.
