- Nyamira University College is set to admit students who qualified for university this year but missed application deadlines, starting January or February next year.
- Vice Chancellor Nathan Ogechi has confirmed that the construction of a tuition block is nearing completion, with the first cohort of 1,000 students to be admitted in Business, ICT and Agriculture programmes.
- Ogechi has said the institution will transition into a fully chartered university named Nyamira University within three years, once gazetted as a university college.
Nyamira University College, a constituent college of Kisii University, will admit students who qualified to join universities this year but never applied for admission.
Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi said the college, being constructed by the government, will be ready by December this year and start admitting students in January or February next year. He said thousands of students had qualified for university admission but never applied for various reasons, and these students will be admitted at the college to pursue various courses. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had earlier said thousands of qualified students never applied to join universities, prompting the government to extend application deadlines to give them time to apply.
“Construction of a storey tuition block and offices started in October last year and are nearing completion. 16 units have to be constructed and will be ready by latest February next year,” Ogechi said after inspecting construction being done by the Ministry of Defence.

Speaking at the site, the Vice Chancellor said groundbreaking for the library will be done next week, adding that the government is funding the project and the first cohort of 1,000 students will be admitted next year, with the number potentially increasing depending on available infrastructure.
Ogechi noted that Kiabonyoru Boys Senior School had been relocated elsewhere to pave way for the construction of the university, with the school and community members giving the school’s title deed to be held under the custody of Kisii University. “The University College will be gazetted,” Ogechi said, adding that students who qualified to join universities have already started applying for admission through Kisii University.
He said once the university college has been gazetted, it will transition into a chartered and full-fledged university within three years and will be named Nyamira University, rather than remaining a constituent college of Kisii University. The first cohort of students will be admitted to undertake programmes in the School of Business Programs, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Ogechi said Kisii University will transfer the curriculum to the college, adding that the State Department for Housing and the area Member of Parliament are collaborating to construct hostels to accommodate students. He urged investors to take advantage of the college and build rental houses to accommodate the high number of students expected to join the institution.
