The Ministry of Education (MoE) has extended the Grade 10 selection and placement exercise for learners completing Grade 9, giving schools more time to finalise the process after prolonged disruptions on the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) portal.
The exercise, which targets about 1.2 million Grade 9 learners, was initially scheduled to close on September 11, 2026, after opening on August 24.
However, persistent technical challenges on the KEMIS portal affected the exercise, with several Junior Schools unable to submit learners’ Senior School and pathway choices within the stipulated period. Schools and parents had consequently appealed for more time before the original deadline elapsed.
The portal was restored in early September and became fully operational shortly before the original deadline, leaving schools with limited time to complete the selection process.
The limited time prompted schools and education stakeholders to appeal to the Ministry for an extension to allow institutions affected by the technical problems to complete the exercise.
Ministry extends selection window
The Ministry has now extended the Grade 10 selection and placement exercise, giving schools additional time to finalise submissions following the KEMIS disruptions.
Schools that had not completed the selection process have been directed to log back into the KEMIS portal and finalise their submissions.
Education officials are also urging all Junior Schools to ensure that every Grade 9 learner is accounted for and that their preferred Senior School pathway is correctly captured in the system.
The extension is expected to ease pressure on schools that were unable to complete the process during the initial window because of the portal challenges.
The Grade 10 Selection and Placement System allows Grade 9 learners to select their preferred pathways, subject combinations and Senior Schools as they prepare to transition to Senior School under Competency-Based Education.
Schools have therefore been advised to use the additional time to verify all entries and ensure that learner choices are accurately submitted to avoid complications during placement.

Parents and learners can also use the official “My Selections” section of the portal to view Senior School choices and subject combinations and download a confirmation slip.
