Nkareta Secondary School in Narok County will reopen on Monday, September 7, 2026, after a week-long closure occasioned by a severe water shortage.
In a notice issued by Principal Dr Parmale Kuluo, students have been directed to report back to school from 9.00am on Monday.
The institution was temporarily closed on August 30 after persistent water shortages made it difficult for the school to sustain essential operations, including hygiene and sanitation.
Nkareta Secondary School normally relies on water transported from Narok town by water tankers.
However, suppliers have faced difficulties accessing the school because of the poor condition of the approximately 15-kilometre road connecting the institution to the tarmac.
The water crisis has been a longstanding challenge at the school.
The institution says it has drilled boreholes, but water from the sources has not been suitable for human consumption without expensive treatment.
The school has therefore continued purchasing water from Narok town.
The closure was intended to provide time for the administration and local leaders to seek an urgent solution to the problem.
The school management had called on leaders and relevant authorities to intervene, particularly in addressing the water shortage and poor road infrastructure.
Water project offers hope
The Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency has also been involved in efforts to improve water access at the institution.
In July 2026, the agency inspected the Nkareta Secondary School Water Project as part of a tour of ongoing water projects in Narok County.
With students now expected to return on Monday, attention will remain focused on whether adequate water will be available to support normal learning and boarding operations.
The school administration has urged all students and parents to take note of the reopening date and reporting time.

The latest notice has provided relief to students and parents after the disruption, while also highlighting the need for a permanent solution to Nkareta Secondary School’s water challenges.
