Thousands of students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) pursuing Certificate and Diploma courses can now apply for government education loans following the opening of the 2026/2027 funding window by the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
The application period began on August 21 and will run until September 30, giving eligible students more than a month to submit their applications.
KMTC on Tuesday urged students pursuing certificate and diploma courses to take advantage of the window and complete the process before the deadline.

“When you ask us, we listen. You asked us for a HELB loan. Now, we have some good news for you,” KMTC said.
“The HELB 2026/2027 KMTC Loan Application is now open for students pursuing Certificate and Diploma courses. Application window: August 21- September 30 2026.” The college added.
The opening of the loan window follows a government commitment to bring KMTC students into the higher education financing system.
President William Ruto had earlier directed that medical training students be included in the scheme, paving the way for them to access HELB financing.
The development marks a change for KMTC students, who have traditionally depended largely on the institution’s revolving fund to meet their education costs.
Unlike university students, who have had access to government-backed loans and scholarships through HELB, KMTC learners have had limited access to the same financing arrangements.
Their inclusion in the Higher Education Financing programme is expected to widen access to financial support and reduce the burden of meeting training costs for students pursuing medical careers.
The move could particularly benefit students from families unable to meet the cost of training, as the government seeks to expand access to higher and technical education.

KMTC has advised eligible learners to complete their applications within the stipulated period rather than wait until the final days of the exercise.
The latest development comes as the government continues expanding HELB financing beyond traditional university programmes to cover more categories of learners in tertiary and professional training institutions.
