- Cheruiyot has also revived stalled KMTC projects in Eldoret, Kilifi, Kapkatet, Mosoriot and Bomet, bringing more than three decades of health and development experience to the role.
President William Ruto has reappointed Joseah Kiplangat Cheruiyot to a second three-year term as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), effective August 21, 2026, in a move that hands him continuity over an expansion drive he has overseen since first taking the role in 2023. The reappointment was made under Section 9(1) of the Kenya Medical Training College Act.
A resident of Kapsasian Ward in Transmara East sub-county, Narok County, Cheruiyot brings extensive experience in community development, health programmes, institutional management and governance to the role. Under his leadership, KMTC’s campus network has grown to 92, with new campuses established in previously underserved regions including Chemolingot, Mandera, Marsabit, Suba and Narok, part of a broader push to widen access to medical training in areas that have historically lacked health training institutions.

Cheruiyot has also been credited with reviving and completing stalled KMTC projects in Eldoret, Kilifi, Kapkatet, Mosoriot and Bomet, unlocking additional training capacity at the institution. Alongside the expansion, the KMTC board under his watch has focused on improving infrastructure and creating a more conducive environment for students, while working closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen training programmes and ensure graduates are equipped with skills suited to the changing needs of Kenya’s health sector and opportunities in the international labour market.
His track record in health and development work spans more than three decades. Cheruiyot previously served as a Programme Officer with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF-France), where he was involved in medical intervention programmes in Luo Nyanza and parts of Western Kenya, and as a Community Linkages Officer with the PEPFAR Walter Reed Project, contributing to community-based HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis control initiatives. At Tenwek Mission Hospital, he served as a Development Officer overseeing programmes to strengthen the institution’s outreach and healthcare services, and he has also served as a board member of the Lake Victoria Water Services Board, contributing to governance and service delivery in the water sector. He holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Planning and Management from the University of Nairobi.

Cheruiyot’s reappointment, which runs for three years from August 21, 2026, is expected to provide continuity as KMTC continues expanding its training infrastructure, increasing access to medical education and strengthening its contribution to Kenya’s healthcare workforce.
