A Kakamega family that lost a daughter during the 2023 Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School tragedy has been plunged into mourning again following the death of the girl’s father in a road accident.
David Webo reportedly died in an accident around Lubao on Monday while taking another of his children for university admission.
What was meant to be an important education milestone for the family ended in tragedy following the accident.
News of Webo’s death has triggered an outpouring of grief on social media, with relatives, friends and residents recalling the tragedy that struck the same family three years ago.
Family lost daughter in Mukumu Girls tragedy
Webo was the father of Miriam Namajanja, a Form Two student at Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High School who died during the disease outbreak at the institution in April 2023.
The school administration at the time confirmed Miriam’s death alongside that of Form One student Wendy Oyugi Amani. The outbreak affected hundreds of learners and led to the temporary closure of the school.
Miriam was among the students whose deaths brought national attention to the health crisis at the school.
Her family later moved to court seeking compensation over her death, alleging negligence by the school.
The family’s loss was subsequently documented in Parliament. During Senate proceedings in October 2024, Miriam was identified as Miriam David Namajanja, and the House was informed that Sh500,000 in benefits under the former Edu-Afya scheme had been paid to her parents in February 2024.
Another education journey ends in tragedy
Three years after Miriam’s death, the family was undertaking another important education journey when tragedy struck again.
Webo was reportedly taking another of his children for university admission when the accident occurred around Lubao.
The circumstances surrounding the crash had not been officially established at the time of publication.
Social media messages announcing Webo’s death have described the incident as another painful blow to a family that had already endured the loss of a child.
For those familiar with the family’s history, the circumstances have made the latest tragedy particularly painful — one child died while still pursuing her secondary education, and the father has now reportedly died while accompanying another child for university admission.
Painful memories of 2023
The Mukumu Girls tragedy unfolded in early April 2023 following an outbreak at the school that affected hundreds of learners.
Miriam and Wendy were initially reported dead before further deaths were recorded as the health crisis unfolded.
For Webo’s family, the events meant losing Miriam while she was still in Form Two.
Now, three years later, the family is mourning again following Webo’s death.
Further details about the accident and funeral arrangements were yet to be established.
