  • Siaya National Polytechnic has launched a new e-mobility curriculum in partnership with Songa Mobility.
  • The institution has announced plans to begin implementation at Level Four in January 2027 with two three-month modules followed by mentorship.
  • Songa Mobility has committed to providing trainees with hands-on experience using internet-connected electric tricycles and bicycles.

The Siaya National Polytechnic has rolled out a new electric mobility training curriculum aimed at equipping trainees and mechanics with skills to repair and maintain electric vehicles, tricycles and bicycles as the country shifts towards clean energy.

Speaking during the launch of the curriculum, the institution’s principal, Felix Odhiambo, said that in collaboration with Songa Mobility organisation, the programme seeks to move automotive training away from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles and prepare learners for emerging electric transport technologies.

“The course will give students skills in clean energy and help communities reduce their dependence on fossil fuel,” Odhiambo said, adding that the institution was embracing a future where vehicles would increasingly operate on electricity.

He urged mechanics, particularly those operating in rural areas, to take advantage of the programme and upgrade their skills to remain relevant as electric mobility expands.

Odhiambo said Siaya National Polytechnic was working towards becoming a centre of excellence in e-mobility training and would soon establish a virtual laboratory to enhance practical learning.

“In a year, we will have a very modern training system with modern laboratories and workshops for training in modern technology,” he said.

Deputy Principal in charge of Academics Florence Okeyo said implementation of the new curriculum will begin in January 2027, starting at Level Four.

“We will begin at Level Four in January 2027 and will have two three-month modules followed by mentorship,” Okeyo said.

The institution’s e-mobility trainer, Esau Malala, said the programme would also benefit Jua Kali mechanics by enabling them to acquire skills in servicing and maintaining electric vehicles.

“We are determined to implement this curriculum because we do not want our students to be left behind as technology changes from the normal automotive curriculum to e-mobility,” Malala said.

Songa Mobility Head of Growth and Field Operations Alvin Nyakenya said the partnership would provide trainees with practical experience through mentorship.

He said students would train using the company’s electric tricycles and bicycles, which are fitted with internet-connected systems, giving them hands-on exposure to modern e-mobility technology.
