The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has stepped up pressure on the government to honour its commitment to promote 16,000 teachers, warning that failure to implement the agreement would undermine teachers’ career progression.
KNUT National Second Vice Chairperson Aggrey Namisi said the union would continue to push for the welfare, rights and professional interests of teachers across the country.
Namisi said the government should implement the agreement reached during a State House engagement and facilitate the promotion of the remaining 16,000 teachers.
He said teachers who have served diligently deserve recognition through career advancement and improved professional opportunities.
“The government should honour the agreement reached during our State House engagement by ensuring that the remaining 16,000 teachers are promoted as agreed,” Namisi said.
KNUT raises FEASSA travel concerns
The union official also put the government on notice over preparations for Kenyan teams participating in the forthcoming Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Namisi called on the government to ensure that all pupils and students representing Kenya have the requisite Yellow Fever vaccination certificates and temporary passports processed before departure.
He said parents should not be left to shoulder expenses and logistical obligations that fall within the government’s responsibility.
“Parents should not be unnecessarily burdened with costs and logistical responsibilities that should be handled by the Government,” he said.
Namisi speaks at thanksgiving ceremony
Namisi spoke at Bituyu Comprehensive School in Tongaren, where he represented KNUT Secretary General Collins Henry Oyuu during a thanksgiving ceremony in honour of Issa Ndukuyu, KNUT Bungoma North Branch Executive Secretary.
The event brought together KNUT officials and union representatives from across the Western region.
Among those present were Executive Secretaries Robert Mandila of Bungoma East and Shadrack Ngayi of Kakamega North.

KNUT Treasurer for the Rift Valley region Phoebe Maneno and other union officials and invited guests also attended the ceremony.
