- St Mary’s Yala and defending champions Highway Secondary School opened their KSSSA National Term Two Games campaigns with victories in Group A.
- Tumaini Secondary School recorded the biggest win of the opening day, while Kakamega School also secured maximum points in Group B.
- The winners remain on course for the knockout stage and qualification to this month’s FEASSSA Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
The 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two Games got off to an exciting start on Sunday at the M-PESA Foundation Academy in Thika, Kiambu County, as top football teams battled for early advantage in the race for national glory and qualification to the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games.
In the boys’ football competition, national debutants St Mary’s Yala from Nyanza made an impressive statement after defeating Menengai High School of Rift Valley 2-0 in their Group A opener.
The Siaya County champions produced a disciplined performance to earn maximum points and move to the top of the group with a superior goal difference.
Former national champions Highway Secondary School also started their title defence on a winning note, edging former national champions Tononoka Secondary School from Nairobi 1-0 in a closely contested encounter.
The victory left Highway level on three points with St Mary’s Yala, setting up an exciting battle for Group A supremacy.
Tumaini, Kakamega shine in Group B
Group B witnessed the biggest victory of the opening day as Tumaini Secondary School of Eastern thrashed Baricho High School of Central 6-1 in a dominant display of attacking football.
Kakamega School also enjoyed a comfortable afternoon, beating Takaba Secondary School from North Eastern 3-0 to collect all three points and remain within touching distance of the group leaders.
Following the opening round of matches, Group A standings see St Mary’s Yala leading with three points and a goal difference of +2, followed by Highway on three points with a goal difference of +1. Tononoka and Menengai are third and fourth respectively without a point.
In Group B, Tumaini top the standings with three points and a goal difference of +5, ahead of Kakamega, who also have three points following their 3-0 victory. Takaba and Baricho occupy the bottom two positions after suffering opening-day defeats.
The girls’ football competition also began on a high note. Nyakach Girls of Nyanza and Kaya Tiwi Girls from the Coast lead Group A after winning their opening matches, while former national champions Archbishop Njenga Girls and Misuuni Girls share the top positions in Group B following successful starts.
The national championships continue this week, with schools seeking places in the knockout stage and an opportunity to represent Kenya at the FEASSSA Games later this month in Morogoro, Tanzania.
