- West Pokot pupil Dominic Pkiror Domoruk has qualified for the East Africa Athletics Championships after years of dedication.
- The young athlete will represent Kenya at the regional competition in Morogoro, Tanzania, this August.
- His journey from walking long distances to school to national success has inspired many in his community.
Athletics is one of the activities conducted during the first-term school calendar of events.
It comprises both track and field events, where athletes compete according to their abilities and level of training.
One such athlete is Dominic Pkiror Domoruk from West Pokot County, who stunned the crowd during the National Athletics Championships held in Kericho in January this year.
Dominic Pkiror Domoruk was born in the small village of Ng’oleyo, Chemwochoi, in Kapenguria, West Pokot County.
He used to walk about seven kilometres to and from Kapkoris Primary School every day to pursue his education.
Because of the long distance, he often ran to keep pace with the older learners he walked with and to arrive at school on time.
Little did he know that the pace he maintained during those daily journeys would become part of the training that would later propel him to success.
Talent nurtured through persistence
Domoruk began to realise his athletics talent while in Grade Six after qualifying for the regional competitions in 2023.
He repeated the feat in 2024 by once again reaching the regional championships, motivating him to train even harder.
His determination paid off in 2025 when he qualified for the national championships.
Back home in West Pokot, his trainers, Stella Limapus and Kevin Chemelei, intensified his tactical and technical training.
The rigorous training bore fruit in 2026 when Domoruk secured qualification for the East Africa Athletics Championships, which will be held in Morogoro, Tanzania, in August.

His achievement has been celebrated across West Pokot, with residents, education stakeholders and athletics enthusiasts rallying behind him ahead of the regional competition.
Many in the county are looking forward to supporting the young athlete as he represents Kenya on the East African stage.
