Tragedy struck in Tigania East Constituency, Meru County, on Wednesday evening after a school bus carrying learners from Hebesha Academy, who were returning from a school trip, was involved in a fatal accident at Ngumba along the Mikinduri–Kunati–Gatithine road in Thangatha Ward. Two pupils lost their lives while several others sustained serious injuries.
According to security officers from Mikinduri Police Station, the injured learners were rushed to different hospitals for treatment as investigations into the cause of the accident commenced.
Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia expressed his condolences through a statement on his official Facebook page, describing the incident as heartbreaking.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families, the parents, teachers, fellow pupils, and the entire community of Thangatha in Tigania East Constituency following the tragic road accident at Ngumba along the Mikinduri–Kunati Road that claimed the lives of two innocent children and left several others injured,” he wrote.
Thangatha Ward MCA Elijah Kimathi also mourned the tragedy, calling it a sad day for the community. He extended sympathy to the families of the deceased and prayed for strength and comfort during the difficult period.

Kimathi commended residents, medical personnel and emergency responders for their swift action in rescuing and caring for the affected learners. He further urged the public to avoid speculation and allow investigators to establish the cause of the accident.
Ward MCA aspirant Mainda Facii joined in consoling the families, terming the incident heartbreaking. He thanked all stakeholders who responded to the emergency and assured the Hebesha Academy community of his support.
Residents who attended the scene expressed grief but also praised the quick response from healthcare workers and emergency teams. The accident has reignited calls for enhanced road safety measures in Tigania East, with local leaders pledging to work together to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
