As schools across Kenya prepare to close for the August holiday, Narok youth leader Moses Kiyapi has called on parents and guardians to take a leading role in guiding and mentoring their children during the break.
Speaking in Narok, Kiyapi said school holidays provide an important opportunity for families to strengthen relationships and instil positive values in young people.
He noted that without proper guidance, some children may become vulnerable to negative influences such as drug and substance abuse, crime, early pregnancies and other risky behaviours.
He urged parents to create time to engage their children in meaningful conversations about discipline, education, responsible use of social media and making wise life choices.
Parents urged to remain actively involved
According to Kiyapi, open communication between parents and children is one of the most effective ways of preventing moral decline among young people.
The youth leader also encouraged parents to monitor their children’s movements and the company they keep during the holiday period.
He emphasised that every child deserves a safe and supportive environment that promotes personal growth and prepares them for the next school term.
Community support key to learner development
Kiyapi further appealed to community leaders, religious organisations, teachers and local administrators to work together in organising constructive activities for young people during the break.
Such programmes, he said, can help nurture talents, promote leadership skills and keep learners productively engaged.
He reminded students that the holiday should not be viewed as a time to abandon their academic goals but as an opportunity to rest, support their families and prepare adequately for the upcoming school term.
Kiyapi urged all stakeholders to play their respective roles in protecting children, saying the future of the country depends on raising responsible, disciplined and well-guided young people.

He expressed confidence that, with strong parental involvement and community support, learners would return to school ready to excel both academically and socially.
