The succession battle at Kibabii University has taken a new twist after the Public Service Commission (PSC) formally advertised the Vice Chancellor’s position, even as the institution’s Council maintained that Prof. Isaac Ipara will continue serving in an acting capacity until a substantive office holder is competitively recruited and appointed.
The vacancy, listed under PSC Vacancy No. 139/2026, invites qualified candidates to apply for the university’s top leadership post, with applications closing on August 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. (EAT). The announcement marks the official start of the recruitment process but is unlikely to ease the controversy surrounding the succession plan.
The Kibabii University Council insists that Prof. Ipara remains the lawful Acting Vice Chancellor and will continue discharging the responsibilities of the office until the recruitment exercise is concluded. The debate has spilt beyond the university’s corridors into the political arena, drawing in leaders and stakeholders keenly watching the process.
Former Kanduyi MP Wafula Wamunyinyi is among those who have weighed in, calling for a transparent, competitive, and law‑anchored recruitment exercise. His intervention underscores the heightened political interest in the appointment, with the university’s next chief executive expected to play a pivotal role in steering the Bungoma‑based institution into its next chapter.

In its vacancy notice, the PSC directed applicants to submit their applications through its online recruitment portal or other prescribed channels. The Commission cautioned the public against fraudsters purporting to influence the process and reiterated that it does not charge any fees for applications, shortlisting, interviews, or appointments.
The successful candidate will be tasked with providing strategic leadership, overseeing academic and administrative functions, strengthening governance, and driving research, innovation, and institutional growth.
With the recruitment process now underway, attention has shifted to the PSC and the Kibabii University Council as stakeholders await the appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor.
