Teachers, leaders and members of the community gathered in Busia County on Saturday, July 25, 2026, for a thanksgiving service in honour of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Busia Branch Chairman, Justine Majale, following his successful re-election during the union’s branch elections held in February 2026.
The ceremony, held at Majale’s home, celebrated his renewed mandate and attracted a large congregation of teachers, clergy, community members and leaders from across the region.
The event was led by KNUT Secretary General, Collins Oyuu, who was accompanied by Western Region National Executive Council (NEC) member Jackline Mulindi and KNUT Busia Branch Executive Secretary Patrick Mulamba.
Among the guests were Busia Governor Dr. Paul Otuoma, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, former Busia County Woman Representative Florence Mutua, Labour Party leader and former Funyula MP Prof. Julia Ojiambo, as well as other political leaders, aspiring leaders and religious leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Oyuu thanked teachers for demonstrating confidence in the union’s leadership during the elections and urged them to continue supporting their elected officials to enable them to effectively advocate for teachers’ welfare and professional interests.
He said teachers had already begun benefiting from the implementation of the second phase of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), noting that the July 2026 salaries reflected the agreed salary increments negotiated between KNUT and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

The Secretary General also welcomed the implementation of the revised Career Progression Guidelines (CPG), describing the reforms as a major milestone in addressing teacher stagnation. He said the new guidelines provide clearer career progression pathways, promote fairness in promotions and create more opportunities for professional growth across the teaching service.
Oyuu further appealed to Members of Parliament and other political leaders to support teacher welfare initiatives currently before the National Assembly. He called for increased budgetary allocations to facilitate teacher promotions, recruit more teachers to address staffing shortages and provide adequate capitation to schools to improve the quality of education.
Governor Otuoma emphasised that education remains the foundation of national development and urged leaders to continue investing in the sector. Quoting former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, he said a nation that neglects education risks compromising the future of its generations. He described education as the greatest equaliser and called for collective efforts to strengthen learning institutions and improve opportunities for learners.
Majale thanked teachers for once again entrusting him with the leadership of the Busia Branch and pledged to continue championing their welfare, unity and professional development. KNUT also congratulated the Busia Branch for conducting peaceful elections, saying the exercise reflected members’ commitment to democratic leadership and a stronger teaching profession.
