Lwala Community Hospital has announced a new partnership with the United States-based TramutoPorter Foundation to strengthen continuous professional development for healthcare workers, with officials saying the initiative will improve patient care and strengthen Kenya’s health system.
The Foundation’s Medical Education Fund will finance continuing medical education, mentorship programmes and a training-of-trainers model aimed at ensuring healthcare professionals remain updated on emerging medical technologies, diseases and modern treatment guidelines.
Medical Officer-in-Charge Dr Chadwink Omondi said quality healthcare begins with investing in the people who provide frontline services.
“I have always believed that people drive systems, and when we invest in people, we strengthen healthcare,” he said.
Omondi noted that healthcare workers in rural Kenya face numerous barriers to professional development, including financial limitations, travel costs and heavy workloads.
He said Lwala Community Hospital has established a learning culture where experienced practitioners, students and young clinicians work together to improve their skills while serving patients.
The hospital said the initiative has contributed to its recognition as a Centre of Excellence and its accreditation by the Clinical Officers Council as an official clinical training site.
In 2025 alone, the hospital supported the training of more than 130 students and healthcare professionals from different health disciplines.
Clinician In-Charge Karen Boyi said the hospital’s mentorship programme is built on both professional competence and compassion.
“When our hospital staff train and mentor other health workers, we carry not only our clinical skills but our commitment to treating patients with dignity. This is what we are known for,” she said.
She said healthcare workers should combine technical knowledge with teamwork, respect, integrity and empathy when attending to patients.
Training-of-trainers model adopted
TramutoPorter Foundation Co-founder Donato Tramuto said compassionate leadership is central to strengthening healthcare systems.
“Compassion is not a soft ideal. It is a force that changes lives, strengthens communities and shapes a more just world,” he said.
Hospital officials said the training-of-trainers approach will ensure healthcare workers who receive specialised training pass their knowledge and skills to colleagues and future practitioners.
The model is expected to create a multiplier effect by extending the benefits of specialised training beyond Lwala Community Hospital to healthcare professionals in Migori County and other parts of the country.
The initiative is expected to strengthen the skills and competence of healthcare professionals while improving the quality of services offered to patients.

Hospital officials said sustained investment in healthcare workers is essential as the sector responds to emerging diseases, technological changes and evolving clinical guidelines.
