More than 350 girls have been left without shelter after a devastating fire razed a dormitory at Lugulu Boarding Comprehensive School on Wednesday evening, reducing students’ belongings and school property to ashes.
The inferno destroyed the girls’ dormitory that accommodated approximately 350 learners, leaving the students stranded as authorities moved swiftly to guarantee their safety and security.

Police officers were deployed to the institution and remained camped at the school to monitor the situation and ensure the security of the affected learners as investigations into the cause of the fire commenced.
In the wake of the disaster, neighbouring Lugulu Girls National School stepped in to provide temporary accommodation to the displaced students, offering the learners a safe place to stay as recovery efforts continue.
Bungoma County Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga, accompanied by other local leaders, visited the school on Wednesday evening to assess the extent of the damage and offer support to the affected students. During the visit, the leaders donated blankets to help cushion the girls from the immediate effects of the tragedy.

Speaking to Education News, the Head of Institution, Jane Ngichabe, confirmed that investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the fire.
“The matter is under investigation, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities as they seek to determine what caused the incident,” said Ngichabe.
The fire has dealt a major blow to the school, with hundreds of learners losing personal belongings in the blaze. However, the swift intervention by security agencies, neighbouring institutions and local leaders has helped ensure the safety and welfare of the affected students.
