How candidates can access digital KCSE certificates and verify their credentials online

  • KNEC has introduced an e‑Certificate platform allowing KCSE candidates from 1989 onwards to access and download official digital certificates.
  • Applicants register on the KNEC portal, complete their profile, and pay KSh1,500 via M‑PESA or an online gateway to generate a certificate.
  • Employers, universities, and institutions can authenticate certificates through the platform, reducing fraud and simplifying admissions and recruitment.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has unveiled a streamlined digital system that enables former Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to access, download and securely verify their certificates online, marking another significant milestone in the country’s ongoing digital transformation of public services.

Through the e-Certificate platform, candidates who sat the KCSE examination from 1989 onwards can generate an official digital version of their certificate, eliminating the need for lengthy manual verification processes. The platform also allows employers, universities and other institutions to authenticate certificates with ease, strengthening the integrity of academic credentials.

How to register for the e-certificate service

Candidates are required to visit the KNEC e-Certificate portal through the council’s official website and register as an Applicant (Student/Alumni) if they are first-time users.

During registration, applicants provide their full names and email address, after which the system sends a six-digit One-Time Password (OTP) to the registered email. The OTP remains valid for 10 minutes and is used to activate the account.

Existing users can simply log in using their email address and request a fresh OTP to access their dashboard.

Once logged in, applicants are required to complete their personal profile by providing details such as their citizenship, full name, date of birth, mobile phone number and national identification number where applicable.

Steps to generate a digital KCSE certificate

After completing their profile, users can select Generate e-Certificate from the dashboard before entering their KCSE index number, examination year and examination type.

The system automatically validates the information against KNEC records. Upon successful verification, applicants proceed to payment.

KNEC charges KSh1,500 for every e-Certificate issued. Payments can be made through an M-PESA STK Push sent to the registered phone number or via the platform’s online payment gateway.

Once payment is confirmed, the digital certificate is generated instantly and becomes available for download as a PDF document.

Built-in certificate verification

Beyond downloading certificates, the platform also offers an official certificate verification service for employers, universities, scholarship providers and other institutions.

Applicants are required to upload the downloaded e-Certificate, enter their KCSE examination details and select the intended recipient from a list of registered institutions or manually provide the recipient’s details.

Users can choose their preferred delivery method, including email, before accepting the consent declaration and completing the required payment.

The system then generates an official verification report and sends it directly to the intended institution while simultaneously notifying the applicant via email that the verification process has been completed.

The digital verification service is expected to significantly reduce document fraud while simplifying recruitment, university admissions and professional licensing processes.
