- Teachers from Transmara West will gather for their first sports tournament aimed at promoting mental health, fitness and unity.
- KUPPET says the initiative seeks to help teachers cope with work-related stress through sport and recreation.
- Organisers hope the tournament will become an annual event across all nine sub-counties in Narok County.
Teachers from Transmara West Sub-county will converge at Kilgoris Boys Playing Ground on Sunday, July 19, 2026, for the inaugural Transmara West Teachers’ Sports Tournament, an event aimed at promoting mental wellness, physical fitness and unity among educators.
The tournament, organised by the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), is expected to bring together teachers from various schools across the sub-county for a day of sporting activities, networking and recreation.
Narok KUPPET Executive Secretary Saruni Tasur said the initiative was informed by the growing need to address mental health challenges facing teachers arising from work-related pressures and other social demands.
“The main focus of this tournament is mental health. We want to give teachers an opportunity to relieve stress associated with their daily work through sports and physical exercise. A healthy teacher is more productive both in school and in society,” said Tasur.
The event will be held under the theme, “Stress Isiue Mwalimu. We Are a Family,” highlighting the importance of supporting teachers’ well-being and fostering a strong support The tournament will feature football, volleyball, athletics, sack racing and tug of war.
“These disciplines have been carefully selected to encourage physical exercise, teamwork and healthy competition among teachers while providing a fun and relaxing environment away from the demands of the classroom,” said Tasur.
He noted that sports provide an effective platform for teachers to interact outside the school environment, strengthen friendships, promote teamwork and improve their physical and emotional well-being.
Programme to cover all sub-counties
Tasur revealed that the tournament forms part of a broader KUPPET programme aimed at reaching all the nine sub-counties in Narok County.
According to him, similar sports competitions have already been successfully organised in three sub-counties, with Transmara West becoming the latest beneficiary.
“Our intention is to cover all the nine sub-counties in Narok County. We have already held similar events in three sub-counties, and the response has been very encouraging. Teachers need such forums to interact, exercise and take care of their mental health,” he said.
Besides promoting fitness, the competition is expected to strengthen unity among teachers while providing a platform for professional interaction and social support.
