A new chapter in sustainable learning has begun in Keiyo South following the commissioning of the KyoGreen Biogas Unit at Mokwo Girls Secondary School and the expansion of similar projects to other schools in the constituency.
Head of Public Service Felix Koskei said the initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to promoting climate-smart technologies in public institutions while improving service delivery.
“The KyoGreen initiative demonstrates our commitment to sustainable development by providing institutions with affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions. It will reduce energy costs, conserve forests and support Kenya’s climate action agenda,” Koskei said.
The biogas system is expected to provide Mokwo Girls Secondary School with clean cooking energy, significantly reducing dependence on firewood, lowering operating costs and curbing deforestation.
Koskei, accompanied by National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr Chris Kiptoo, said introducing renewable energy in schools would also instil environmental responsibility among learners.
To expand the programme, Changach Barak Primary School and Changach Barak Senior School jointly received Sh480,000 for the installation of two additional KyoGreen biogas systems.

Dr Kiptoo said renewable energy investments strengthen the education sector while supporting sustainable development.
“When schools spend less on fuel, they can invest more in teaching, learning materials and infrastructure. Renewable energy benefits both education and the environment,” he said.
Keiyo South MP Gideon Kimaiyo praised the initiative, saying schools have struggled with rising energy costs.
“This programme will ease the financial burden on our schools and improve learning conditions while protecting our environment for future generations,” Kimaiyo said.
The KyoGreen programme forms part of national efforts to accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies in public institutions and support Kenya’s transition to a green economy.
