Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has launched the National Integration of ICT Learning in Junior Schools at Kaptarkok Junior School in Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet County, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s education sector.

The programme is being implemented by the ICT Authority, under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. It is being delivered through the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP) with support from the World Bank.

Under the initiative, 10,382 public junior schools countrywide will receive teacher laptops and interactive smart boards to strengthen digital learning and support the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.

“Kenya’s journey to the first world requires us to modernise our delivery of education to match first-world standards,” the Deputy President said during the launch.

More than 62,000 junior school teachers have already been trained on the effective integration of digital technologies into teaching and learning, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission.

The programme goes beyond provision of devices. It is building a complete digital learning ecosystem through teacher readiness, reliable connectivity, digital content, technical support and continuous monitoring.

In a demonstration of the technology, learners and guests at Kaptarkok witnessed a live Integrated Science lesson delivered from the school simultaneously to learners in six schools across six counties, showing how technology is breaking geographical barriers and expanding access to quality education.

The first phase of the programme will equip 176 learning institutions across Elgeyo Marakwet County with interactive smart boards.

Building the Digital Superhighway

The rollout complements the Government’s broader Digital Superhighway Programme, under which more than 30,000 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure have been deployed nationwide against a target of 100,000 kilometres. Over 8,000 public institutions have also been connected to the internet.

The Government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that every learner, regardless of location, has access to quality digital learning, positioning Kenya to build a digitally skilled workforce to drive socio-economic transformation.
