Police detain 23 Tambach Boys students over July 6 school unrest

Twenty-three students from Tambach Boys High School are in custody at Tambach Police Station in connection with unrest that rocked the institution on July 6, as authorities move to establish what fuelled the disturbance.

The students are accused of inciting their peers to join the protest, which left window panes shattered across nine dormitories. At the centre of the unrest was a demand by protesting students for the immediate readmission of a colleague who had been suspended following an earlier strike at the school.

Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge said the 23 will be arraigned in court on July 8, even as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the protest.

The July 6 incident is the latest in a troubling pattern at Tambach Boys, where student unrest has flared more than three times in recent months, repeatedly disrupting learning programmes at the school.

The Keiyo North Member of Parliament has since called for a thorough investigation into the unrest, pointing to suspected drug abuse, including marijuana among students as a possible driver of the recurring disturbances.
