  • Her journey demonstrates the power of education, adaptability and continuous learning.

Farida Karoney’s career journey is a powerful reminder that change remains one of life’s greatest constants.

Before rising to become one of Kenya’s most influential public officials, Karoney began her professional life as a Biology teacher. Armed with a Bachelor of Education (Science) degree specialising in Botany and Zoology from Kenyatta University, she briefly taught Biology at a secondary school in Mombasa in 1993.

However, her ambition and passion soon led her into a different profession. In 1994, she joined Standard Media Group through Kenya Television Network (KTN), marking the beginning of a successful media career that would span more than two decades.

Karoney steadily rose through the media industry, serving in various editorial and management positions. She worked as Assistant Director for Broadcasting and later Head of Editorial at KTN before joining Royal Media Services in 2009 as Group Editorial Director.

Her leadership skills saw her promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2014, where she helped oversee operations at one of Kenya’s largest media houses.

Alongside her professional growth, Karoney continued investing in education. She earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication and later a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nairobi.

She would eventually complete a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Strategic Management, further strengthening her academic and professional credentials.

Shift to public service

Her biggest career shift came in January 2018 when former President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated her as Cabinet Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning.

The appointment surprised many, including Karoney herself, as she had no prior experience in land administration.

After parliamentary approval, she assumed office in February 2018 and embarked on reforms aimed at addressing corruption and inefficiencies that had long affected the Lands Ministry.

Among her most notable initiatives was championing the digitisation of land records through the Ardhisasa platform, which was designed to enhance transparency, reduce fraud and improve service delivery.

Karoney also spearheaded efforts to recover illegally acquired public land and streamline land administration processes across the country.

Although her tenure faced legal challenges and resistance from entrenched interests, her reform agenda significantly influenced the management of land records in Kenya.

Following her exit from Government in 2022, Karoney remained active in public service and academia.

In 2024, President William Ruto appointed her Chairperson of the National Lottery Board.

From a classroom Biology teacher in Mombasa to a media executive, corporate leader, Cabinet Secretary and board chairperson, Karoney’s story illustrates how education, adaptability and continuous learning can open doors to unexpected opportunities.
