West Pokot County is on the verge of making history as Kapenguria University College prepares to admit its pioneer students next month, marking the beginning of a new chapter in higher education for the region.

The institution, a constituent college of the University of Nairobi, is expected to commence academic programmes following the successful approval of its operational framework by the University Council and Senate.

The eagerly awaited opening comes after years of planning, consultations and advocacy by education stakeholders, local leaders and the Task Force on the establishment of a University in West Pokot County.

With the task force’s recommendations now fully adopted by the University of Nairobi Council, the university college is ready to transition from planning into full academic operations.

According to the announcement, the University Senate has approved the phased rollout of academic programmes across several faculties, paving the way for the admission of the first cohort of students in August 2026.

The launch is expected to provide thousands of young people from West Pokot and neighbouring counties with greater access to quality university education closer to home.

The College will progressively offer programmes in the Faculties of Business and Management Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Built Environment and Design, and Education. These programmes are expected to form the foundation of the institution as it steadily expands its academic offerings.

The university has also outlined a clear roadmap for introducing specialized professional courses. Programmes under the Faculties of Health Sciences and Veterinary Medicine will begin after the recruitment of additional academic and technical staff, while Engineering and Law courses will be launched once the relevant professional and regulatory bodies grant the necessary accreditation and approvals.

University officials have emphasized that the phased implementation is intended to safeguard academic quality by ensuring that all programmes meet the required staffing, infrastructure and regulatory standards before students are enrolled.

The establishment of the instituition is expected to transform the educational landscape of West Pokot, with many families, studying within the county will significantly reduce the financial burden associated with tuition-related living expenses, transport and accommodation previously incurred by students forced to seek university education in distant towns and cities.

Beyond education, the institution is expected to stimulate economic growth by creating employment opportunities, attracting investment, increasing demand for housing and business services, and promoting research that addresses local development challenges.
