Th Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students who fail supplementary examinations risk repeating an entire academic year, a requirement that comes with significant financial implications despite being allowed a second chance at no extra examination cost.
According to the college’s examination policy, students who score below the 50 percent pass mark in any subject are allowed to proceed to the next semester while awaiting a supplementary examination at the end of the academic year.
The supplementary exam is offered free of charge, giving students an opportunity to clear the failed unit without interrupting their studies.
If a student passes the supplementary examination, any score above 50 percent is adjusted to 50 percent, and the overall mean grade is recalculated accordingly.
However, the policy becomes stricter for those who fail the supplementary exam. Such students are required to repeat the entire academic year and retake all examinations for that year, regardless of their overall mean score.

The repeat year also comes with additional financial costs.
Students are expected to pay tuition and other fees, amounting to about Ksh39,000 per semester, translating to Ksh78,000 for a full academic year
The policy is intended to uphold academic standards while offering students a final opportunity to demonstrate competence before repeating an academic year.
