Vihiga Friends Boys Senior School has received a major boost in its sporting credentials after three students were shortlisted for the Kenya Under-16 National Basketball Trials, while another learner was selected to represent the country at an international rugby tournament in South Africa.

The three students will take part in the national basketball trials scheduled for later this July in Nairobi County, where they will compete for places in Kenya’s Under-16 national team.

In a separate achievement, Grade 10 student Joshua Mogere left for Durban, South Africa, to represent Kenya in the Under-16 Rugby Tournament, becoming one of the few students from the region to earn an international call-up.

Senior Principal Albert Masiolo hailed the achievements as a reflection of the school’s growing investment in talent development and holistic education.

“This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Joshua’s hard work, discipline and dedication to the sport. As a school community, we celebrate this milestone and wish him safe travels, outstanding performances and a memorable experience on the international stage,” said Masiolo.

He added that the school was equally proud of the three basketball players who had earned national recognition through their outstanding performances and commitment to the game.

The latest achievements reinforce Vihiga Friends Boys Senior School’s reputation as one of the country’s emerging centres of sporting excellence, with learners increasingly making their mark in both national and international competitions.

The school community congratulated the four students, expressing confidence that they will represent both the institution and the country with distinction.

Joshua is expected to compete against some of Africa’s finest young rugby talents in Durban, while the three basketball players will be seeking to impress national selectors during the Nairobi trials later this month.

The success has been attributed to the school’s strong support for co-curricular activities, disciplined training programmes and a commitment to nurturing learners into well-rounded individuals capable of excelling both in academics and sports.
