Sameta Boys High School has retained its crown as the Gusii Region Soccer Champions after edging out St. Cyprian Biticha of Nyamira 3-1 in a tense derby staged at Cardinal Otunga High School.

Both schools earned their regional final slot after dominating at the county stage. Sameta Boys swept past opponents in Kisii County to lift the title, while St. Cyprian Biticha did the same in Nyamira County, setting up the much-anticipated Gusii derby.
Sameta Boys High School has retained its crown as the Gusii Region Soccer Champions after edging out St. Cyprian Biticha of Nyamira 3-1 in a tense derby staged at Cardinal Otunga High School.
The final went into a 2-2 draw in full time after both sides traded goals in an end-to-end contest that kept fans on their feet. Sameta, however, held their nerve in the penalty shootout to emerge 3-1 winners and book their place at the next level.
Speaking after the match, Sameta’s coach said discipline and composure under pressure made the difference. “The boys followed instructions and converted when it mattered most. We are ready for the next challenge,” he said.

According to Kenya Senior Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Nyanza Region Organizing Secretary Simon Ongaga, the regional champions will now head to Homa Bay for the Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Term Two Games, which will start on July 7.

Other teams that qualified from Gusii Region alongside Sameta and Biticha include:
Kereri Girls High School – Hockey
Kisii School – Rugby 15s
Cardinal Otunga High School- Volleyball Boys
Nyamira Girls High School- Handball
Ongaga confirmed that soccer teams from Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, and Kisumu counties have already been placed in various pools to meet at Homa Bay County in early July 2026. The qualified boys’ soccer sides are:
Migori County: Kodero Pala High School
Homa Bay County: Ringa Boys High School, Homa Bay High School
Siaya County: St. Mary’s Yala
Kisumu County: Aga Khan High School, Kisumu Day High School
He said the teams will be pooled with Gusii representatives for group-stage matches before proceeding to quarter-finals, adding that all logistical arrangements are complete.
Ongaga urged the teams to uphold discipline and sportsmanship as they represent their counties in Homa Bay.
