Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has outlined an ambitious agenda to transform education in the county after holding a consultative meeting with secondary school principals attending the ongoing Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) national conference in Mombasa.

The meeting, held on Wednesday, June 24, brought together school heads led by Trans Nzoia KESSHA Chairperson Bernard Masinde to deliberate on practical strategies for improving academic performance, strengthening school leadership, and addressing challenges affecting secondary education.

Key proposals discussed included the introduction of structured learner mentorship programmes, expansion of co-curricular activities, teacher motivation initiatives, establishment of sub-county libraries, and investment in water purification and storage projects to improve the learning environment.

The leaders also proposed the introduction of an academy camp and an annual County Education Day to nurture learners’ talents, promote healthy competition among schools, and recognise academic excellence.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Natembeya praised the principals for their dedication to shaping the future of learners and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving education standards across the county.

“I met with dedicated secondary school principals from Trans Nzoia County during a meeting held in Mombasa. Their commitment to shaping the future of our young people is truly commendable,” he said.

The governor further pledged to increase bursary allocations and expand scholarship opportunities for needy students to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder access to quality education.

“Together, we shall continue building a stronger education foundation for the children of Trans Nzoia. I am personally committed to expanding bursaries and scholarships for underprivileged students as a way of improving education standards,” Natembeya added.

KESSHA Trans Nzoia Chairperson Bernard Masinde described the forum as a valuable platform for principals to exchange experiences, discuss emerging issues in school management, and explore innovative approaches to improving educational outcomes.

He commended the governor for engaging directly with school leaders and demonstrating a strong commitment to addressing challenges facing the education sector.

The discussions come at a time when secondary schools across the country are grappling with student unrest, delayed government capitation, rising operational costs, and the ongoing transition to Senior School under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.

Education stakeholders expressed optimism that closer collaboration between the county government and school administrators would help strengthen learning institutions and improve student achievement in Trans Nzoia County.
