Form Four student drowns in Lake Victoria during school music festival trip

A Form Four student from Nyalenda Mixed High School has lost his life after drowning in Lake Victoria during a school trip linked to a music festival held at Mbita Boys High School.

The student, identified as Levis Ouma, is reported to have been overwhelmed by strong waves while swimming in the lake with fellow students.

The incident was reported at Mbita Police Station by their teacher, Peter Ochieng’ Ouma.

According to reports, the students, accompanied by their teacher, had gone to view the lake scenery at a public spot after participating in a musical performance at Mbita Boys High School.

Officers from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, assisted by members of the public, successfully retrieved the body from the lake.

The body was later moved to Mbita Sub-County Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police officers who examined the body confirmed that there were no visible physical injuries.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident as family members, schoolmates and teachers mourn the loss of the learner.

The tragedy has renewed calls for enhanced safety measures during school trips and educational events conducted near water bodies.
