A cloud of grief has descended on participants at the ongoing secondary school music festival in Mbita, Homa Bay County, following the drowning of a student from Nyalenda Mixed Secondary School on Sunday.
The student, who was part of the school’s delegation to the festival, reportedly drowned while swimming with fellow students near the Mbita Causeway Bridge along Lake Victoria during their free time.
According to witnesses, the learner encountered difficulties while in the water and disappeared beneath the surface. Efforts by fellow students and members of the public to rescue him were unsuccessful.

The incident was reported to security officers and rescue teams, who launched a search operation. The student’s body was later retrieved from the lake and taken to a local mortuary pending identification and further investigations.
The tragedy has left students, teachers, and festival participants in shock, casting a pall over the event.
Education officials and school administrators had not issued a detailed statement by the time of publication. Meanwhile, police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether safety protocols for students attending the festival were followed.
The drowning has renewed concerns about the safety of learners participating in co-curricular activities near water bodies, with stakeholders calling for stricter supervision during school trips and events.
Parents, teachers, and fellow students have mourned the deceased, describing him as a promising learner whose life was cut short while representing his school at the prestigious festival.
