Butere Boys High School emerged champions of the 2026 Kakamega County Secondary Schools football championship after defeating rivals Musingu Boys 7-6 on penalties following a tense 0-0 draw in regulation time at the Mumias Sports Complex on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The highly anticipated final lived up to expectations as two of Kakamega County’s football giants battled fiercely for supremacy.
Despite creating several scoring opportunities, neither side could find a breakthrough, with disciplined defending and outstanding goalkeeping ensuring the match remained deadlocked after full time.
Musingu entered the final in high spirits after eliminating Kakamega High School 2-0 in the semi-finals through goals from Dickens Opiyo and Shaban Kwimba.
Butere Boys, on the other hand, had booked their place in the final after overcoming Tande Secondary School in the other semi-final.
With the scores level at the end of regulation time, the championship was decided through a penalty shootout.
Both teams displayed remarkable composure from the spot, but it was Butere Boys who held their nerve to win 7-6 and lift the county title.
The victory secured Butere’s place at the Western Region Games, which will be held in Bungoma County.
Musingu also qualified for the regional championships as county runners-up.
Kakamega High finish third
In the third-place playoff, Kakamega High School defeated Tande Secondary School 2-0 to finish third in the county championship.
However, the tournament concluded amid controversy, with unconfirmed reports indicating that Kakamega High School has lodged an appeal with county KSSSA officials accusing Musingu of fielding an overage player during the competition.
County officials had not issued an official statement on the matter by the time of going to press.
Butere Girls extend dominance
Meanwhile, Butere Girls Secondary School continued their dominance in girls’ football by winning the Kakamega County title for the third consecutive year.
The defending champions defeated Mwira Girls 1-0 in the county final, thanks to a goal by Christine Farrine.
Farrine reacted quickest to convert a well-delivered corner from team captain Patience Asiko, scoring the only goal of the match.
From the opening whistle, Butere Girls controlled possession and dictated the tempo of the game.
Their attacking intent and organised defence limited Mwira Girls’ opportunities, allowing them to comfortably protect their lead until the final whistle.
