- She urged learners to view school uniforms as preparation for future professional and social expectations.
- The message was delivered during the Prize Giving Day ceremony at Gianchere Senior Secondary School
Students at Gianchere Senior Secondary School were treated to more than just awards and speeches during the school’s Prize Giving Day celebration.
They received a powerful life lesson from Kisii County Senator Essy Okenyuri, who arrived at the event dressed in a school uniform, a style that has become her trademark whenever she attends school functions.
As she stood before hundreds of learners, teachers and parents, the senator used her attire to pass a simple but profound message: wearing a school uniform is not a punishment but preparation for life beyond the classroom.
Many students often view school uniforms as restrictive or uncomfortable.
However, Senator Okenyuri challenged this perception, urging learners to appreciate the discipline, responsibility and sense of identity that uniforms instill.
“Some students feel uncomfortable wearing school uniforms and wish they had the freedom to dress as they please. But the uniform is teaching you something important. It prepares you for the outside world where there are rules, responsibilities and expectations,” she said.
Preparing learners for the future
She explained that in many professions, people are required to wear uniforms or adhere to specific dress codes.
From doctors and nurses to police officers, teachers, pilots and corporate employees, professional life often demands discipline in appearance and conduct.
The senator encouraged learners to wear their uniforms with pride, noting that they symbolise equality by removing social and economic differences among students.
“When you wear a uniform, nobody knows whether you come from a wealthy or humble family. It reminds us that we are all equal and that success depends on hard work, discipline and determination,” she told the students.

Her message resonated with many learners, who listened attentively as she shared her own educational journey and the importance of embracing school values.
The Prize Giving Day also celebrated academic excellence, discipline, leadership and achievements in co-curricular activities.
Students who excelled in various fields received awards in recognition of their hard work throughout the year.
Teachers and parents praised the senator’s unique approach, saying her decision to wear school uniforms during school events helps her connect with learners and makes her message more relatable.
More than just clothing
One lesson stood out among the celebrations and awards: the school uniform that many students wear every day is more than just clothing.
