The disappearance of a 20-year-old university student from Nyamira County has ended in tragedy after her body was discovered in a shallow grave weeks after she went missing while preparing to join university.

Faith Kemunto Obino, who had secured admission to Machakos University, disappeared on July 30, 2025, after leaving her parents’ home in Ekerenyo. According to family members, she said she was going to meet her childhood boyfriend, Gideon Makori, but never returned home.

Her disappearance triggered an extensive search involving relatives, friends and local authorities. As days turned into weeks without any trace, concern grew among residents and family members.

During the search, messages were reportedly sent from Faith’s mobile phone indicating she was safe and preparing to report to university. However, relatives later raised doubts after noticing inconsistencies in the messaging style.

The case took a major turn on September 1, 2025, when a message allegedly sent from her phone led investigators to an area near a murram quarry in Maosi village, Nyamira County.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), accompanied by family members and a government pathologist, visited the site and recovered human remains buried beneath dried maize husks in a shallow grave. The remains were later identified as those of Faith Kemunto.

Following the discovery, police launched a manhunt for the prime suspect, Gideon Makori, who had fled the area. He was later arrested in Huruma Estate, Nairobi, where authorities said he was found in possession of the victim’s mobile phone. A second suspect, identified as Vinic Kemunto, was also arrested in connection with the case.

The two suspects were arraigned before the Nyamira Law Courts. Makori denied the murder charges, and the case is ongoing.

The killing has shocked residents of Maosi village and renewed calls for justice and stronger action against gender-based violence.

Faith’s family continues to mourn her death, describing her as a young woman whose future had shown great promise after gaining admission to university.
