A Public Service Vehicle (PSV) ferrying pupils from Ngondi Comprehensive School plunged into a roadside ditch along Maiella Road in Naivasha on the night of June 12, 2026, killing the driver and leaving 21 learners injured.
The vehicle was transporting the pupils home from a friendly women’s football match at Maiella Township when it reportedly lost control and veered off the road at around 8:30 p.m.
Learners Hospitalised
Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured pupils.
The learners were taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Initial reports indicate that about 10 pupils sustained soft tissue injuries while others suffered fractures.
Eyewitnesses said the driver appeared to be struggling to control the vehicle moments before the crash.
Some witnesses suspected that the vehicle may have developed brake problems before it veered off the road, although authorities have not confirmed the claims.
Concerns Raised Over Road Conditions
Residents questioned the timing of the trip, noting that the journey took place late in the evening.
Community members also criticised the condition of Maiella Road, describing it as heavily potholed, uneven and dusty.
They argued that the poor state of the road may have compromised visibility and vehicle stability.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities are expected to inspect the vehicle’s maintenance records and examine the section of the road where the crash occurred.
The incident comes amid growing concern over school transport safety following several accidents involving learners in recent months.
