Siaya County has been thrown into mourning following a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a Grade 1 pupil from Pope Francis Academy.

The incident occurred yesterday evening at Gem Malanga, a well-known black spot along the busy Busia-Siaya road, when a heavy trailer reportedly heading to Busia rammed into a school bus as pupils were boarding to return home.

According to initial reports, the pupils were preparing to leave school when the trailer lost control and crashed into the stationary school bus causing panic and chaos at the scene.

Emergency responders and members of the public rushed to assist the injured.

One Grade one pupil was confirmed dead on the spot, while several others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Local residents described the area as a dangerous “black spot” that has witnessed multiple accidents in the past, raising renewed concerns over road safety and speeding heavy commercial vehicles along the route.

Education officials and security agencies are expected to visit the school and the affected families as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

Police have since launched a probe into the incident and are expected to provide further details on the driver, the trailer and the circumstances leading to the tragic collision.
