Kisii County’s road to the county secondary schools championship is set after a series of hard-fought subcounty finals across Kitutu Central, Nyamache, Sameta, and Gucha produced new champions and familiar rivals.
Ong’icha Secondary School will carry the Kitutu Central Subcounty title into the county championship as they seek to defend the county supremacy they seized from Sameta Boys of Sameta Subcounty last year.
In Nyamache Subcounty, Nyachogo Secondary School will represent after edging rivals Nyamache Boys 1-0 in a tight contest. The win gives Nyachogo bragging rights and a chance to prove themselves at the county level.
Sengera Parish emerged as the new Gucha Subcounty soccer queens after defeating neighbours St. Angela Girls 2-1. The result flips last year’s script, with St. Angela Girls now heading to the county championship as the defending county champions looking to reclaim glory.
All eyes now turn to Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School, where the Kisii County championship will be held on the 17th of this month. Nyakorere SDA, Ong’icha Secondary, Nyachogo Secondary, Sameta Boys, and St. Angela Girls are among the teams expected to battle for county honors.
Speaking on the preparations, Simon Ongaga, the recently elected Kisii County official of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association, said plans for the competitions are at an advanced stage to ensure they go on successfully. He acknowledged that some schools had been disrupted by the recent nationwide unrest and sudden closures, but noted that contingency measures are in place.
Ongaga said the fixtures have been organized into four pools from A to D. In Pool A, Ong’icha from Kitutu Central will face Nduru from Gucha at Metembe Secondary School. In Pool B, Nyakorere from Kenyenya will meet their neighbors Ndonyo of Etago Subcounty at Nyamagwa Boys High School.
Pool C will see Nyakoora from Marani take on Getuki, the new soccer champions from Gucha. In Pool D, Nyamache Boys from Nyamache will play Cardinal Otunga Mosocho at St. John’s Nyamagwa Boys High School. The qualifying teams will advance to play the finals at Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High School grounds on the 18th of this month.
He urged team managers and games teachers to maintain discipline at all venues and warned teams against using ineligible players. “Any team found using ineligible participants will face heavy penalties,” he said.
