The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has launched a nationwide teacher capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing digital skills and strengthening performance management systems in schools.

The initiative combines Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration training with Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) and Remote Learning Management (RLM) sessions, as part of efforts to prepare educators for the demands of a technology-driven education system.

The ICT training programme, scheduled to run from June 12 to June 26, 2026, is being implemented under the Kenya Digital Economy Acceleration Project (KDEAP), and it adopts a Smart Cascade Model, where master trainers first equip Trainers of Teachers (TOTs), who will subsequently mentor Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on digital pedagogy and the effective use of educational technologies.

Ahead of the ICT rollout, teachers across the country are participating in TPAD and RLM training sessions taking place between June 3 and June 5, 2026. The sessions are designed to strengthen teacher appraisal processes and improve the management of remote learning, ensuring educators can effectively support learners in both classroom and virtual environments.

The programme focuses on four key areas: ICT integration, TPAD and RLM enhancement, capacity building, and monitoring and evaluation. Teachers are being trained on the use of digital learning platforms such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams and Moodle to improve lesson delivery and learner engagement.

In addition, TSC is leveraging ICT champions and TOTs to ensure sustainable knowledge transfer and continuous professional development among teachers. A structured reporting and evaluation framework has also been put in place to assess the effectiveness of the training and inform future reforms within the education sector.

The Commission expects the programme to improve teachers’ digital literacy, enhance performance appraisal practices and strengthen the delivery of quality education through technology. The initiative is also expected to bolster the resilience of the education system by ensuring continuity of learning during disruptions that may require remote teaching and learning.

A senior TSC official said the programme reflects the Commission’s commitment to equipping teachers with skills that align with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and the growing demands of the digital economy.

“TSC is committed to upgrading teachers to meet the demands of a digital economy and competency-based curriculum,” the official said.

Teachers participating in the training welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the integration of digital learning skills and improved appraisal systems would modernise teaching practices while enhancing accountability and professional growth.

The nationwide rollout marks a significant step in TSC’s ongoing efforts to transform teacher professional development and position educators to deliver quality, technology-driven and accountable education across Kenya.
