Speaker of the Makueni County Assembly, Douglas Mbilu, has called on the government to employ competent professionals, adding that what happened at Utumishi Girls High School is unacceptable.
Mbilu pointed out that, apart from the recent deaths of 16 young girls, there are many issues affecting learners and teachers that remain unaddressed.
He said Kenya has a serious problem when it comes to appointing heads of key dockets, such as education.
He noted that the docket is in the wrong hands and should be given to someone highly competent.
“You cannot take a health expert to head the agriculture docket. Let every docket be headed by an expert in that field. Why don’t you consult teachers and allow them to give you a qualified person who deserves and can lead the Ministry of Education?” wondered Mbilu.
He observed that oversight in the Ministry of Education is wanting, noting that staffing, capitation, and teacher shortages remain serious issues.
On the recruitment of teachers, the Speaker said there is a need for more teachers in classrooms and called for increased recruitment.
However, he urged parents to discipline their children from an early age and always remind them to follow the right procedures when addressing their concerns.

He was speaking at the burial of Naomi Ndambuki, mother to KNUT Makueni Branch Executive Secretary Benson Ndambuki.
