Thousands of students, teachers, and education stakeholders from Catholic-sponsored schools in Trans Nzoia and West Pokot counties converged at St. Monica Girls High School in Kitale on Saturday, May 30, 2026, to celebrate the annual Education Day of the Catholic Diocese of Kitale.
The event, which is held annually, serves as a platform to celebrate achievements in education while charting strategies aimed at improving academic standards and promoting holistic development in Catholic-sponsored institutions across the diocese.
The celebrations were led by Catholic Diocese of Kitale Bishop Henry Juma Odonya, who presided over a Holy Mass and delivered a message emphasizing academic excellence, discipline, and moral values among learners.

In his homily, Bishop Odonya urged students to remain committed to their studies while actively participating in co-curricular activities, particularly sports, which he said play a critical role in nurturing talent, character, and personal growth.
The bishop also encouraged learners to embrace love, mutual care, and solidarity, urging them to live as brothers and sisters and become agents of positive change within their communities. He further called on students and teachers to uphold a culture of prayer and support for one another.
In a poignant moment during the ceremony, Bishop Odonya led the congregation in observing a minute of silence in honour of students who lost their lives in the recent fire tragedy at Utumishi Girls High School in Nakuru.
Speaking during the event, Father Paul Sunguti, the Diocese’s Education Secretary, lauded the discipline and outstanding achievements recorded by various Catholic-sponsored schools within the diocese.
Father Sunguti noted that the impressive performance registered by the institutions was a testament to the dedication of teachers, students, parents, and school management boards. He called for continued collaboration among all education stakeholders to sustain and build upon the gains already achieved.

The annual Education Day brought together representatives from schools across the diocese, providing an opportunity to reflect on educational progress, share best practices, and strengthen partnerships geared towards enhancing the quality of education.
