Education in Sigor Constituency, in West Pokot County has received a major boost after area Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Lochakapong commissioned a modern science laboratory at Chesta Girls Senior School during the institution’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The event brought together parents, teachers, students, education stakeholders, religious leaders, and local administrators to celebrate both the school’s academic success and continued investment in educational infrastructure.

The newly commissioned laboratory, constructed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), is expected to enhance the teaching and learning of science subjects by providing students with modern equipment and adequate space for practical lessons and experiments.

The commissioning comes as Chesta Girls celebrates a remarkable academic milestone. The school recorded a 100 percent university transition rate, with all 303 candidates who sat the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination qualifying for and joining universities in 2025.

Speaking during the event, Lochakapong congratulated the school’s administration, teachers, parents, and students for the outstanding performance, describing the achievement as a testament to the power of collaboration among all stakeholders in education.

“This success demonstrates what can be achieved when learners, teachers, and parents work together with a common purpose,” he said.

The legislator noted that education remains the most effective tool for transforming communities and creating opportunities for young people. He emphasized the importance of investing in modern learning facilities to ensure students can compete effectively in an increasingly competitive world.

According to the MP, the science laboratory forms part of broader efforts by the constituency to improve learning infrastructure and provide students with the resources necessary to excel academically.

He challenged students to remain focused on their studies and uphold the culture of excellence that has become synonymous with the institution. He urged them to continue working hard and avoid complacency despite the school’s impressive achievements.

The law maker also encouraged learners to embrace discipline, integrity, and responsible behavior, noting that academic success should be complemented by strong moral values.

He warned students against negative influences such as drug abuse, indiscipline, and peer pressure, which continue to pose challenges in educational institutions. He advised them to remain committed to their goals and avoid activities that could jeopardize their future.

The MP further called on parents to remain actively involved in their children’s education, emphasizing that parental support remains a critical pillar of academic success. He encouraged parents to maintain close collaboration with teachers and school administrators while providing guidance and support at home.

He further commended the school administration and teaching staff for creating a conducive learning environment that has enabled students to excel, and teachers for their dedication and commitment to preparing learners for national examinations.

Education stakeholders welcomed the commissioning of the laboratory, describing it as a strategic investment in the future of learners. They noted that improved science facilities would strengthen practical learning and inspire more students to pursue careers in fields such as medicine, engineering, technology, and agriculture.

Religious leaders who attended the event underscored the importance of balancing academic excellence with moral and spiritual development. They encouraged students to uphold strong values, respect authority, and make positive life choices throughout their educational journey.

Among the leaders present were area MCA Jacob Toungole, Hon. David Kapelsiwa,  Limanyang, and members of the clergy led by Bishop Thomas Lokori of ELCK Kerio Valley Diocese. They commended the school’s progress and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in the region.

The AGM was marked by a sense of pride and optimism as parents, students, and stakeholders celebrated the school’s achievements and welcomed the additional investment in infrastructure.

The commissioning of the modern science laboratory represents another significant milestone in the school’s growth and is expected to benefit generations of learners while strengthening the institution’s pursuit of even greater academic success.
