Ambira High School in Siaya County has received a major reprieve after education and sports stakeholders approved the resumption of sporting activities following last week’s student unrest that led to extensive destruction of school property.

The decision was reached during a closed-door meeting attended by officials from the Ministry of Education (MoE), Teachers Service Commission (TSC), Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA), and other stakeholders.

According to the resolution, soccer and volleyball players will report back to school on June 5 to begin preparations for the upcoming Ugunja Sub-County KSSSA championships, scheduled to take place shortly afterward.

The move has been welcomed by students, alumni and sports enthusiasts who feared the unrest would derail Ambira’s participation in this year’s competitions.

The school has traditionally been one of the region’s sporting powerhouses, particularly in football and volleyball.

The resumption of training is expected to give the teams adequate time to prepare for the sub-county games as they seek qualification to higher levels of competition.

The development is also significant because Ambira High School is set to host the 2026 Siaya county KSSSA championships, making the restoration of normal activities a priority for education authorities.

Despite the recent challenges, stakeholders remain optimistic that the school will quickly recover and refocus on both academic and sporting excellence.

With the players expected back on campus in a matter of days, Ambira’s sporting journey is back on track, offering renewed hope to the school’s supporters ahead of the Ugunja sub-county championships.
