The Principal Secretary for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Dr Esther Muoria, has called for a major shift towards industry-driven skills to prepare Kenyan youth for the competitive global market.
Speaking in Wajir during the launch of the Thematic Week ahead of this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, Dr Muoria emphasized that conventional classroom learning is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of the modern economy.
The Principal Secretary urged stakeholders to collaborate closely in educating, skilling, and empowering young people. She also championed the implementation of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework, which formally validates competencies and skills acquired through informal learning and practical work environments.
Dr Muoria emphasized that investing in practical, industry-driven skills is essential in preparing young people for a competitive global economy. She stressed the importance of giving formal recognition to individuals who acquired their skills and trades outside the traditional education system.

This year’s celebrations are themed “Education, Skills and the Future.” The Ministry of Education is overseeing the planning process to ensure that all activities align with the national theme.
The 2026 celebrations will be the first national holiday event to be held in Northern Kenya since independence. In preparation, the government has constructed the 10,000-seater Wajir Stadium and upgraded key infrastructure, including Wajir International Airport and surrounding road networks.
