Identification of bodies is currently underway following the devastating fire incident at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru County, where authorities continue efforts to establish the identities of students who lost their lives in the tragedy.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that the exercise is being conducted with the support of the Ministry of Health and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), as families remain at the school awaiting formal confirmation and closure.
The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a dormitory while students were asleep, prompting a rapid multi-agency emergency response.
Security teams, including the Kenya Defence Forces, ASTU units, and the Nakuru County Fire Brigade, worked jointly to contain the blaze within a few hours and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the institution.

In the aftermath, injured students were rushed to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention.
Many have since been treated and discharged, while a small number remain under observation in stable condition.
A multi-agency crisis response team drawn from the Ministries of Interior, Education, and Health, together with the Kenya Red Cross and county officials, remains on site coordinating ongoing support, counselling and investigations.
Murkomen further stated that investigations have been launched to establish the cause of the fire, emphasizing the government’s commitment to uncovering the circumstances behind the tragedy and strengthening safety in learning institutions.
