Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos Ogamba has launched the Teacher Wellness and Engagement Research Report, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers.

Speaking on Tuesday, May 26, morning during the launch, Ogamba said the future of Kenya’s education system depends on educators who are financially stable, mentally healthy and professionally motivated.

He praised teachers for their critical role in shaping society and nurturing millions of learners across the country’s educational institutions.

“Teachers are not only educators but also mentors, role models and custodians of the investments we make in the education sector. The education system will never thrive unless the teacher is thriving financially, physically and mentally,” said the CS.

The report follows a nationwide survey conducted jointly by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and Knightwise Human Capital to assess the welfare, engagement and working conditions of teachers in Kenya.

Ogamba said the government has continued to put in place measures aimed at promoting teacher welfare and enhancing performance in schools.

The CS further noted that the ministry of education, in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission and other stakeholders, is focused on facilitating career progression and creating a conducive environment that enables teachers to perform effectively.

The ministry boss emphasized that improving teacher welfare is essential in strengthening the country’s education standards and achieving quality learning outcomes for students.

Stakeholders present during the launch underscored the need for continued investment in teachers’ mental wellness, financial stability and professional development, noting that empowered teachers are key to building a strong and resilient education system in Kenya.

The KNUT delegation at the event was led by Deputy Secretary General Hesbon Otieno and included members of the National Steering Committee as well as KECSHA National Treasurer Kennedy Kyeva among other education stakeholders.
