The national government has embarked on the construction of 3,600 hostel units in universities, TVET institutions and KMTC colleges across Kwale County.
The new development is part of the government’s efforts to expand student accommodation and improve learning conditions.
Speaking in Lungalunga Constituency during the laying of the foundation stone for the Sh260 million hostel project at Lungalunga Technical and Vocational College, President William Ruto said the initiative forms part of the government’s broader plan to equip learning institutions with adequate and modern facilities.
He said the Lungalunga project will significantly boost the college’s accommodation capacity and provide a dignified and conducive environment for learners.

“The project will enhance accommodation capacity in the institution and ensure students learn in dignity,” he said.
Ruto added that similar hostel units will be constructed in other learning institutions within the county, noting that improved infrastructure is a key pillar of the government’s education transformation agenda.
Government to sponsor students
The President further announced that the government will sponsor more than 250 students from the area to pursue short courses at Lungalunga Technical and Vocational College at a cost of Sh5 million.
He said the sponsorship programme reflects the government’s commitment to empowering young people with practical, market-ready skills.
“The sponsorship is part of our commitment to empowering youth with practical skills,” he said.
Ruto noted that equipping young people with technical competencies is key to increasing their employability and enabling them to tap into emerging economic opportunities.
Coast development projects
Later, the President commissioned the Diani Modern Market and launched a last-mile connectivity programme in the same area, saying the projects are aimed at boosting local trade and improving access to essential services.
President Ruto, who began his five-day Coast tour on Thursday morning, said the government is making significant investments to unlock the region’s economic potential.
During his visits to Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa counties, he revealed that Sh1.4 billion has been injected into the National Mariculture Resource and Training Centre to support the breeding of marine fingerlings for restocking coastal waters.

He said the investment is expected to increase fish production, enhance food security and create new livelihood opportunities for communities depending on the blue economy.
