Vocal Africa is calling on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the suspicious death of a 24-year-old student from Kiambu National Polytechnic at Kiambu Police Station.
According to the human rights organisation, the student, identified as Brian Njung’e, was arrested on Thursday, May 21, in the Kirigiti area of Kiambu Town.
Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid said it remains unclear why Njung’e was detained by police.
Khalid stated that Brian called his mother at around 9 a.m. after his arrest.
Alarmed by the situation, the family rushed to the police station shortly before noon. Upon arrival, they requested to see Brian but were reportedly asked to wait.
At around 2 p.m., the family was informed by a police officer that their son had allegedly died by suicide while in custody.

According to police, Brian was the only inmate left in the cell after his cellmates had been taken to court. However, the circumstances surrounding his alleged death remain unclear, and the family has challenged the police account of events.
