Kakamega: Ingotse Boys closed indefinitely following night of rampage

Burnt sections of the school library following unrest at Ingotse Boys High School.

Ingotse Boys High School in Kakamega has been closed indefinitely following a violent student protest that erupted on the night of Wednesday, May 20, leaving property destroyed and learning activities paralysed at the institution.

Reports indicate that students damaged multiple facilities within the school before walking out of the compound.

The school library was among the hardest-hit facilities, sustaining extensive damage during the unrest.

Reports further indicate that parts of the building were set ablaze, leading to the destruction of books, furniture, and other educational materials. Authorities are yet to establish why the library was specifically targeted.

Following the incident, the school administration closed the institution on Thursday, May 21, directing all students to leave the school as investigations continue.

The closure of Ingotse Boys High School is the latest in a recent wave of school unrest cases reported across the country. The incidents have raised concern over student discipline, welfare, and conflict resolution mechanisms within learning institutions.

Earlier this month, other schools, including Ambira Boys High School in Siaya and Tambach Boys High School in Elgeyo Marakwet, also reported unrest incidents that resulted in destruction of property worth millions of shillings.

Education stakeholders have urged schools to strengthen counselling programmes, improve communication between students and administrators, and enhance security measures to prevent similar incidents in future.
